Article 10: What to do if your page has a ‘Content Modified’ error

Problem:

In visiting the page, we noticed that the content has changed since the previous visit. This is a problem that requires attention only if the edits are unexpected and may indicate an underlying error or unauthorized modification.

Background:

Over the years that we’ve been watching Web sites for our clients, we’ve found that errors are often introduced when unauthorized people make changes without the knowledge of the Webmaster. This is usually someone else from within the department, but is sometimes a hacker from outside the organization. As a safety precaution and to help Webmasters track changes to their site, we raise a warning when the page content changes.  Since the Webmaster is usually aware when authorized changes are being made, an unexpected ‘Content Modified’ warning may indicate authorized modifications to the page.

Possible Reasons and Recommended Action:

  1. If the edits to the page are valid and authorized, no action is needed.

  2. If the page has changed automatically as designed, no action is needed. If the page automatically changes often you can contact us to have the ‘Content Modified’ messages suppressed.

  3. If the page has changed due to an underlying failure or configuration error, you should diagnose and repair the problem.

  4. If the changes to the page are unauthorized you should review your internal procedures and Web site security.
